Would you like to have straight, even teeth but think you're too old for orthodontic treatment? Or what about metal bracket and wire braces - are they too uncomfortable and too unsightly? There is a great solution for adults who want to improve the look and function of their teeth without the embarrassment and discomfort of metal braces. It's called Invisalign, an outstanding alternative to traditional orthodontic appliances.
How Invisalign looks and works
The Invisalign system involves a series of clear plastic trays or aligners that fit comfortably over the teeth. They resemble the trays that dentists use for whitening procedures. Aside from being comfortable to wear, they are removable and are practically invisible. That's what makes them so attractive to adults and teens. Invisalign aligners apply gentle pressure to the teeth, gradually correcting their position, and are barely noticeable as they work.
The aligners are custom-made from BPA-free plastic and are designed using x-rays, other imaging and impressions taken in the dentist's office. Each set of aligners puts pressure on different teeth. Every 4 to 6 weeks, the patient gets a new set. Treatment time varies from 9 to 18 months, depending on how complex the case is, but, on average, adults wear Invisalign braces for about a year. Dentists and orthodontists use them for a range of patient problems, including spacing, crowding and misaligned bites.
Caring for Invisalign aligners
Oral hygiene for the Invisalign patient is basically the same as if he or she wore no appliances at all. The individual simply removes the aligners to brush twice daily and floss once a day. After eating, he or she rinses and cleans the aligners with warm water. Most individuals wear the appliances 20 to 22 hours a day and do not find them irritating to the soft tissues of the mouth. People take them out while eating, for special occasions or for getting their pictures taken.
Patients are pleased.
Best of all, adults who use Invisalign report they are happy with the results and are comfortable during treatment. They enjoy eating the foods they like without the dietary restrictions that metal wire and bracket braces require. In addition, many patients find that the aligners also help with bruxism, or tooth grinding, which can wear down, chip and crack tooth enamel.
